Costa Rica Pick 123 Specimen 50 Pesos 1885-88, PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58. San Jose, 18xx (1885-88). PMG Notes: Printer’s Stamp / Previously Mounted, Small Hole. This important, and impressive archival banknote has the usual Violet rectangular stamp with “RETURN TO / ISSUE ROOM / To be held for reference.” There is also a printer’s script pencil notation in the left reverse margin with “1 – Bd St – 12 – 21 – 71” (the old ABNCO Philadelphia address was Broad Street). This indicates a much earlier date than those given by PMG, Pick, or in the ABNCO record archives as the issue dates. This is the same notation, in the same hand, as on the 10 and 25 Peso notes we also offer. There is an additional Red script printer’s notation “Oct 1884”, in the same hand, as on the 25 Peso note, in the UR margin. The mounting remnants along the bottom are undoubtedly from one of the famous American Banknote Company sample books. The small hole at the center left margin is from a staple removal (same location as the staple still in the 10 Peso note), and there are a number of small pinholes to the right of it, extending down to the LL corner. Very well centered, crisp, and bright. Extremely rare, and the only one graded by PMG.
